Internal Communications Strategy

DB Cargo UK is the country’s largest rail freight operator, transporting essential goods across the nation’s rail network, from cereals and steel to biomass and petroleum. Operating in a competitive employment market, the organisation recognised the need to reinforce internal culture, pride and consistency across its workforce.

The brief was to develop a cohesive internal communications strategy that would resonate with employees across multiple sites and depots nationwide. Working closely with the Head of Communications, we defined a refined internal tone of voice, clarified brand values and created a structured communications framework to guide messaging across the business.

This foundation was translated into a suite of internal graphics and branded materials designed for high-impact application within operational environments.

Original photography played a central role in the rollout. Capturing 107 employees across the organisation, the imagery ensured authenticity and visibility for the workforce itself. Combined with 23 bespoke internal graphics including wall vinyls, mounted displays, flags and banners, the strategy was implemented consistently across sites throughout the UK.

Even environmental elements were considered, with selected spaces updated in DB Red to reinforce brand cohesion and presence within depots and offices. The result is a unified internal communications system designed to strengthen engagement and foster pride within one of the UK’s most significant transport operators. An internal brand activation built at national scale.
