Google My Business gives you a platform to control your visibility on Google Search and on Google Maps. It’s easy to sign up - you just need a Google account. Verification is simple too as Google sends a verification code to your business address, ensuring that no one will claim your business but you.

Adding your street address will enable your business to appear on Google Maps. This is especially important if your business is in an unusual location or has a postcode that sat-navs struggle with as it shows your exact business location. It also enables people to enter your business name on Google Maps and navigate directly to it using Maps on their mobile device.

You can upload photos of your business, which is vital if you have a customer-facing location such as a restaurant or hotel. Customers can also upload their photos of your business, building the library and encouraging others to do the same.

Customers can leave reviews of your business and whilst retaining a 5* rating is a definite goal, it shouldn’t be the main reason for encouraging reviews. Engaging with your customers who leave reviews is a fantastic touch-point that builds loyalty. This goes for all reviews - don’t just say ‘Thanks’ to a 5* review or be confrontational towards a bad review. If other potential customers see you engaging with your reviewers, then it will help reinforce a positive image of your business.
